These Homemade Orange Creamsicles use simple fresh ingredients to recreate the childhood classic popsicle, with a healthy twist!

Like many American kids, my childhood summers were filled with memories of many sweet frozen treats, and creamsicles definitely topped the list. With a sweet vanilla ice cream center and a bright orange coating, they were like a cross between an Orange Julius from the mall and an ice cream float. After recently recreating the Strawberry Shortcake Popsicle, I knew I had to do the same with Orange Creamsicles! This version is simple to make but packed with that undeniable creamsicle flavor, only made a bit healthier using fresh orange and yogurt. The recipe inspiration came from my Orange Creamsicle Pie on my other website. It's blended up and then frozen in popsicle molds for an easy summertime treat.

Ingredients Needed and Substitutions

  • naval orange (both the zest and the orange segments will be used)
  • vanilla Greek yogurt (using flavored yogurt helps nail the classic orange-vanilla taste, but plain Greek yogurt can also be used for a slightly less sweet option)
  • heavy cream
  • granulated sugar
  • orange marmalade (in addition to the fresh orange, this gives it an undeniable orange flavor)
  • coarse kosher salt (this recipe was tested using Diamond Crystal coarse kosher salt. If you use Morton's kosher salt or fine salt, decrease by about half for volume, or use the same amount by weight.)
  • vanilla extract

Best Type of Popsicle Mold

There is a wide range of popsicle molds available, varying in shapes, sizes, and materials. The most popular choices are plastic, stainless steel, or silicone molds.

I own about 6 different popsicle molds (we eat a lot of popsicles) in various materials and shapes, each with its unique advantages. For this recipe, I prefer silicone molds because the popsicles come out effortlessly. Here is the exact silicone popsicle mold I use.

I also have a similar stainless steel popsicle mold and a reliable plastic one that I've had for years, and it has never let me down!

The number of popsicles this recipe yields will depend on the size of your popsicle mold, but the recipe is based on 10 (3-ounce) popsicles.

How to Make Them

Step 1: Zest the orange into the blender, cut off the peel and discard, then remove any seeds from the orange segments.

Step 2: Add the orange slices and the remaining ingredients to the blender.

Step 3: Blend until completely smooth.

Step 4: Pour the orange yogurt mixture into the popsicle molds.

Step 5: Add the sticks and freeze until solid.

Step 6: Use hot water to remove the popsicles from the molds.

Best Way to Store Homemade Popsicles

It's ideal to remove the popsicles from the mold within a day of making them, especially if stored in a plastic container. This helps prevent any off-tastes or smells from developing. Once removed, wrap each popsicle in parchment paper and store them in a plastic or airtight container. For the best quality, consume them within one week.

Description

These Homemade Orange Creamsicles use simple fresh ingredients to recreate the childhood classic popsicle, with a healthy twist!

Ingredients

  • 1 navel orange, washed and dried
  • 1-½ cups (360 grams) vanilla Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup (115 grams) heavy cream
  • ¼ cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup orange marmalade
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon coarse kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Using a rasp grater, remove the zest from the orange and add to the base of a blender. Using a sharp knife, cut off the peel of the orange and discard. Remove any seeds from the orange. Place the seeded orange segments in the blender.
  2. Add the yogurt, heavy cream, sugar, marmalade, vanilla, and salt to the blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Divide the orange yogurt base evenly among the popsicle molds.
  4. Add the covers and popsicle sticks to the molds.
  5. Freeze overnight until solid.
  6. To loosen the popsicles from their molds, either run them under warm running water for 10 to 15 seconds, or dip them in a bowl of warm water for the same period of time and gently pull on the sticks to release.
  7. Wrap each popsicle individually in parchment paper, then place them in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. Freeze until solid, 30 to 60 minutes.

Notes

This recipe makes enough for 10 (3-ounce) popsicles, but the quantity can vary depending on the size and shape of the popsicle mold.

For a less sweet popsicle, use unsweetened Greek yogurt

This recipe was tested using Diamond Crystal coarse kosher salt. If you use Morton's kosher salt or fine salt, decrease the volume by half.
